A spontaneous fishing afternoon turns into a family BBQ on the rocks – the first seed of what would become Tulum.
Our Story
From a family fishing afternoon in 2011 to one of the island’s favourite beach bars – this is how Tulum was born on this exact spot.
Some stories don’t start with a business plan — they start with a moment. For Tulum, that moment came in 2011, on a quiet beach where Spiros and George’s father Panos went fishing one afternoon. When they caught a big fish, they phoned the whole family with excitement. A small portable BBQ happened to be in the car, and within minutes, everyone gathered on the rocks to cook, laugh and share food by the sea.
No one knew it then, but that simple family afternoon was the spark that would one day become Tulum.
As the years passed, summers on that beach became a ritual. George, Spiros and their families built a small hut with their own hands. Days were filled with BBQs, music, friends coming and going, and the kind of memories that stay with you forever.
Eventually, the hut became a tiny caravan turned into a kitchen — with inside jokes, “table number 5 needs salt” and guests who were mostly just friends… but treated like family.
By 2021, the dream had grown into something bigger. George and Spiros decided it was time to share this hidden piece of coastline with more people — a quiet bay facing the ghost town of Ammochostos, with soft sand and crystal-clear sea. Tulum opened its first season with a few seats, a lot of passion, and the same family spirit that started everything.
Between seasons, George’s months of backpacking across Mexico and Central America added new colours, ideas and energy to the vision. The real Tulum, the culture and the freedom of travel blended naturally with Spiros’ building experience and creativity. Together, they shaped something authentically theirs.
Today, Tulum is more than a beach bar. It is a community — a place built by family, run by family, and shared with everyone who steps onto the sand with the same mindset. A place to meet, to dance, to celebrate, to feel at home. Many of the island’s most special moments have happened right here.
And the beautiful part? The story that began with a small BBQ on the rocks… is still being written every summer.

We open Tulum with just a few seats and a lot of heart, sharing this special spot with the public for the first time.
